At least 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

State officials confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
