{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"
"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
